In the United States alone there are more than 12 million people who drink to excess and can be considered alcoholics. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism the following is a standard as to whether or not you consume alcohol heavily:
- For a healthy male under the age of 65 consuming an absolute maximum of four drinks a day or 14 drinks a week. If you consume alcohol in greater volume than this you are considered a heavy drinker.
- For healthy females under 65 or healthy men over 65 three drinks and a day or 12 drinks in a week is maximum. If you consume alcohol in greater volume than miss you are considered a heavy drinker.
Being a heavy drinker and being an alcoholic are not necessarily the exact same thing. Here are the top warning signs that you are an alcoholic and have a drinking problem.
- Do you wonder if you have a drinking problem? this is one of the biggest signs asking yourself this question.
- Drinking alone.
- Coming up with a variety of reasons to drink or celebrate. This is usually in the earlier stages of alcoholism. To ease your conscience in the beginning you would need to come up with reasons to celebrate because in your mind this makes you not an alcoholic.
- The tendency to become aggressive, angry, or violent when drinking sometimes.
- Getting in trouble with the law because of your drinking.
- Doing things when you are drunk that you later regret or are embarrassed by.
- Doing things when you are drunk that you do not recall at all the next day.
- Drinking or getting drunk is one thing you look forward to on a regular basis.
- Poor eating because you drink alcohol instead of eat.
- The inability to reduce or stop the amount of alcohol you’ve consume.
The one thing that exacerbates alcoholism worldwide is because alcohol is legal. When in reality any other drug that produced the consequences and health complications that alcohol does would be made immediately illegal. The fact that it is legal usually makes it take longer before an individual can recognize having a problem and the fact that it is legal makes it so easy to obtain inexpensively.
